spice it up

Sometimes its the little ingredients that give a dish its greatness. Here a few things I like to keep to hand.

Herbs and Spices

Adding herbs and spices can be a game changer for even the simplest of dishes. I always have turmeric, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, garam masala, thyme, onion powder, garlic powder, chilli powder and a medium curry powder in my spice rack. I love to cook using fresh herbs like parsley, basil, mint and coriander and these are great especially when adding them towards the end of the cooking process, for example if your making a curry dish, sprinkle on some chopped coriander just before you serve it. It not only tastes amazing but also looks the part. Dried herbs are just as good as fresh and a little cheaper to buy but should be added at the start so they have time to infuse into the dish. I also use fresh garlic a lot when cooking not only does it keep the vampires away but it is said to have positive health benefits like, lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and improving circulation. Just make sure your not at the dentist the next day.

Cocao/Cacao Powder

I use this daily and usually go through around 125g per week as I am a bit of a chocoholic. Its great in smoothies and sweet breakfast dishes like over night oats. Cacao powder and cocoa powder are actually the same thing so don’t be fooled into buying a glamorously marketed healthier version. The only difference is how the powder is processed raw or roasted. Raw is when the beans are processed and transported under 46c and I very much doubt that any powder is 100% totally raw as it would be a massive undertaking.

Plain Chocolate

Sticking with chocolate and why not! Plain/dark chocolate is an ideal way to get your chocolate fix without the guilt trip and if you pick a good quality bar which has around 75% cocoa and low in sugar a couple of pieces a day can actually be good for you. Just don’t eat the whole bar in one sitting.

Salt

I use course Himalayan rock salt. It is said to have health benefits due to its high mineral content but always go easy especially if you have problems with your heart or over 50 as too much sodium is  very bad for you.

Vinegar

Vinegars are great in dressings and sauces and some like apple cider vinegar is actually good for your blood pressure and digestive system. You can even use it to wash the windows.
